A drink-driving arrest turned into an animal affair when two of the passengers that an intoxicated motorist was putting in harm’s way was his pet zebra and macaw.
Police made the unusual arrest when a passerby reported seeing a zebra and a macaw sitting in a pick up truck parked outside the Doghouse Bar and Lounge in Ankeny, just outside Des Moines.
Local station WTVR reports that when the officers arrived on the scene, the car was being driven away by their owner, 55-year-old Jerald Reiter.
They discovered that the exotic animals are pets of Mr Reiter, and like some children, the animals enjoy car rides.
Reiter didn’t intend to leave his beloved pets inside, but he told KCRG that in the past, the owners allowed him to bring the zebra and the bird into the bar.
That plan was thwarted, however, as Reiter said the owner would not let the animals in because they were serving food that evening. The owner told the station that they never allow animals in their establishment.
Reiter says that he knew he was too drunk to drive shortly after getting in the vehicle and that he was getting out to let a human passenger take the wheel when the police started questioning him.
After hearing the bizarre explanation, the police tested Reiter’s sobriety and he failed a number of tests.
He was arrested for drunk driving after it was noted that he had a 0.148 blood alcohol level, which is well above the 0.08 legal limit.
Reiter and his wife treat the animals as their household pets, as one picture shows Reiter’s wife feeding them in their kitchen.
This isn’t the first case of a zebra showing up in an unexpected gin joint, as British racehorse trainer Bill Turner would regularly take his pet Zebedee with him to the pub in Sherborne, Dorset
